Berlin has introduced a law elevating the status of pedestrians and making its mobility ecosystem more usable for wheelchair users and the visually impaired. The so-called ‘pedestrian law’ – an amendment of the city’s 2018 Mobility Act – was passed by the state parliament at the end of January and is the first time a German city has put pedestrian travel on a legislative footing. The new legislation requires each of Berlin’s 12 districts to develop a relevant pilot project within three years....

25-year-old computer science student Zain Qaiser was sentenced to more than six years in April after admitting he was part of a Russian-speaking cybercrime group that made huge profits from victims in over 20 countries. Prior to his arrest, Qaiser spent his gains on luxury hotels, prostitutes, gambling, and drugs. He also purchased a $6,586 (£5,000) Rolex watch, which he’s been ordered to sell to make the repayment. Qaiser was told to hand over $356,811....
In an announcement published earlier today, BMW spoke of its new PHEV vehicle feature that will automatically switch the car to fully electric mode when it enters one of nearly 80 low emission zones in cities across Europe. The system was developed by part of the BMW Group in Rotterdam....

Gebru, a former co-lead of Google’s Ethical AI team, on Thursday launched an independent lab: the Distributed AI Research Institute (DAIR). Armed with an initial budget of $3.7 million raised from foundations, DAIR will focus on long-term and community-based research — which can be hard to do in Silicon Valley. “The incentive structures in industry and elite academic institutions that are so intertwined with these tech companies don’t — in my view — allow for the kind of work I want to do,” Gebru said at a summit organized by Women in AI Ethics....

One reason for this is that many plastics are not recyclable in our current system. And even those that are recyclable still go to landfill eventually.
